Peasant Village, Visual effects in live action

Peasant Village - Meat snake, one frame comp

Did a quick comp test to see if my passes/layers worked. Click for 720p version. No motion blur yet… The two fingers holding the snake are CG smile Feedback would be much appreciated as final rendering of the entire sequence is ahead! Ta!

  1. Looks absolutely fantabulous! I noticed one thing though. The light coming in from the left could perhaps effect the last third of the tail of the 'thing' a bit more. (The part not shadowed by the hand) It doesn't quite match the fringe you see on the sleeve, wich makes it kind of blend with the jacket. You would expect the wet surface to recieve even more light than the jacket. I could be wrong, it's a bit hard to tell from one shot. Piis

  2. Ahaa! Thank you Björn! You are absolutely right. Will definitly take a look at this today. I can fix this in post as I have rendered out a normal pass (get your butt over to our classroom today and I'll show you the magic of normal passes, it's toadly awesome!) I'm having problems with getting the snake feel like it's actually there. When shooting we had the camera at some distance and really zoomed in (to get nice DOF and to get rid of lens distortion). This also produces a really "flat" image. A bit challenging to get an abstract slimy snake to fit in! Thanks for your critique, much appreciated! Tadaa!

  3. Hello Looking really good. I think the comp still needs a bit of work though, but I'm sure you're on it. I'm a bit curious if you have any 3d elements in a scene were there's actually a zoom happening. If so did you manage to get a good camera solve? As there is no parallax during a zoom its hard for the software to know whats going on. At my company we have a tool for this which I think saved a lot of shots.

  4. Hey Olle, thanks for your comment. Yeah, I've been comping the scene for two days now, and I'm pretty satisfied. Will post a few stills from it later tonight. Yeah we do have one shot with zoom, a lot of zooming in and out actually. It's a nodal pan shot though and we managed to get a really good solve from Boujou. A lot of manual tracking markers had to be used though. Martin posted a previz of the track earlier, you can watch it here: http://gscept.com/index.php/sp2010/comments/peasant_village_-_monster_shot_match_move/ ... We decided early on that we wouldn't use zoom in the shots where we used a "free cam" as we had no idea how to solve such a camera. Would be cool to try some of these awesome inhouse tools the big studios have :D
