Progress report 8 - Project is done!
in 3D Environment DesignAt least for Milestone 3. Unfortunately, I (being the noob that I am) screwed up the bumpmaps. I used the textures themselves for the bumps and it worked well, but when the scene started to get bigger and heavier, the IPR render (that I used to preview whether it looked good or not) got so slow that it pretty much started taking time of my rendering hours. GOD FORBID, I said to myself (I really did not), and lowered the quality of the clips from “Production” to “Preview”, and simply went with the bumps that I had, so that I could be done in time for MS3. Thus, the bumps are too deep and too dark.
So, I know what the problem is, I know how to fix it, it was just a matter of making the deadline or not, and I thought that was more important than nailing the quality 100%.
This weekend, before the 24th, I will render the scenes again, with less bump and higher quality. So fear ye not.
The clip is at the moment a tad to big to upload to SVN so I will re-render it to a smaller size to fit. Sucks but it’s not my fault!

Progress report 7
in 3D Environment DesignThis week I’ve been busy lighting the scene for a dramatic effect. I just started the rendersequences.
Not much to say really. I’m on time and I hope that the renders will work out right away.
Then it’s just a matter of putting it all together in Fusion and Premiere, and make it all look good.
While the renders are busy hogging my computer at school, I will sit down and focus on the music and “in-between-shots”-clips.

Progress report 6
in 3D Environment DesignThis week have consisted of basically just doing lighting and pickups. Everytime I’ve looked at a room I’ve come up with new items to put in or new ideas for textures.
It shouldn’t be a problem thought, I’m on schedule and when the lighting is done I will bake it out into lightmaps which will speed up my rendering significantly.
Anyway, finally the texturing is complete. It took me a while, around 2 weeks. No wonder thought, I had such huge plans and ideas along with hundreds of models that needed textures.
I’m happy it’s done.
Here is a picture of the lighting in the kitchen. Outside there will be a blue/red animated lighting to simulate the rooflights on a police car. I will also place the little lightbulb inside the fridge.
But still, you can see what I mean with the dark colors and the single lightsource in the room.

Progress report 5
in 3D Environment DesignThis past week have been pretty much the same as the last one, I’ve basically just been texturing the scene. I worked my way around the house by using the previz camera angles to determine what textures I would need to focus more on that others.
But atlast, the texturing is complete. There are some minor things that I will need to work abit more on, but still. The next step will be bumps and occlusions, and then I will start with the lighting.
Hopefully that will go smooth, since the scene consist mostly of spotlights to begin with, and alot of dark areas and natural shadows. Thankfully it takes place during the night hours so I won’t have to imitate a fully realistic skylighting.
Here are som pictures of the progress. Unfortunately I got “A error has occured. Rendering aborted.” while rendering the outside of the house (I think somethings wrong with the roof texture), and I have no idea how to fix that so these 2 will have to do.

Progress report 4
in 3D Environment DesignThis week have consisted of texturing and some final modelling.
I also gathered references of my lighting, to get a better picture of what mood I want to deliver to the viewer.
I’m somewhat ahead of schedule and will have no problem making it according to my weekly schedule.
Here are som pictures from my texturing progress along with lighting references.

Progress report 3
in 3D Environment DesignThis week I have been busy modelling smaller items and putting together a previz for Milestone 2 (Monday).
Not much to say really, the previz took longer than I expected, since i’m doing my best to get the right camera angles,
so I will have to work this upcoming weekend aswell.
All will be ready for Milestone2 though.

Progress report 2
in 3D Environment DesignHave been modelling like crazy. The entire neighbourhood is near complete, with houses and backgrounds. I’m going to put some cars in there aswell.
I have also created a script for my scenes, deciding angles and cameramovements. Simply so I don’t have to model and texture anything that won’t be shown on film anyway.
Here are some screenshots from the weeks work. A frontview of the house, a SWAT van, etc. More to come.

Progress report
in 3D Environment DesignThe modelling is going well and before I keep going I will decide my camera angles so that I don’t have to model more than necessary.
Here’s four pictures taken straight from Autodesk Maya 2009.
To save bandwidth I only show one.
The first is a picture of the hallway and one of the livingrooms:
