Shortfilm, HVFX - The film
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXSo this is the latest version of the film. There are still a few things that we want to fix but we are pleased with the over all result of the scenes.

shortfilm, HVFX - Rendering and post production
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXThis week has mainly been about rendering and working on post production effects and editing in Fusion. We have added some more particle effects in the helicopter scenes as well as fluid explosions. We had to remove the tracking markers from all the clips and add images of the vehicle into most scenes. The color correction in each clip still need some tweaking. We rendered out a preview of the clips from the beginning of the movie, just to give us a better feel for what has to be done next. Our priorities now will be focused on our main scenes containing cg material.
We added the raw material at the end of this preview to give both us and the viewer an insight of what has been going on this last week.

shortfilm, HVFX - fluids and Shatter effects
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXSo this week has been mainly about understanding fluids and shatter effects. We have also been working a bit more on the various radar scenes, trying to make them a bit more interesting. Working on the fluid effects took up most of our time and progress was slow due to rendering time. We starteded looking into shatter effects to give the helicopter explosion some more deapth and to make the scenes more interesting to the viewer.
We had to make a new basic run cycle for the radar sequence, as well as a basic animation of the car getting blown up. Combining maya fluids with SW particles gave the explosion a bit more deapth and force.
We decided to go with a cloth shatter effect on the helicopter with SW particles bound to the shatter via goals and then later adding on particles emitted as children of the main particle system. Hopefully this will give a glow effect on the metall debree as if it is melting in the air.

shortfilm, HVFX - explosion using fluids and sw missile
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFX
This week has been all about understanding fluids and tweaking the dynamics of the rising cloud, a snow cloud rushing towards the camera and animating the missile and its smoke trail. We had some bad luck with the rendering as the computers where updating during render hours, wich forced us to use layers of early rendered material.

shortfilm, HVFX - Bodydouble and minigun tests
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXThese two videos display the bodydouble tests that we made during the week as well as the minigun scene wich is still on the wishlist. The bodydouble is a simple animated character that is animated in a scene that has planes with projected textures. We added a sw explosion to see how the character would work with the final explosion added later on. The Minigun scene is rendered both in sw and hw render and with 2d motionblur on the sw render layer. We were’nt satisfied with the result of the 3d motionblur on the minigun barrels so we went with the 2d instead. Might have gone a bit crazy with the sw particles that we threw in to visualize the heat and smoke emitted from the barrels.

shortfilm, HVFX - cgset and sw particle testing
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXDid some testing with a bodydouble and how the projected texture plane would work with particles and lighting/collisions. It seems to be working so far, although the scene is in an early stage. We will ofcourse add shadows to the particle effects as well, making them more dynamic in the scene.

Shortfilm, HVFX - previz pics
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXThis week we have been working on the previz, mostly so that we will have an idea of what has to be done in the shortfilm. You get a much better view of the technical difficultys once the previz is done and the scenes have been studied more carefully. Exporting the camera from the filmed material to maya went very smoothly and also the tracking has been without problems so far.
We had some trouble early on this week. Some part in the maya scene containing the vehicle (the humvee) caused fatal error, wich had to be resolved quickly, this ofcourse costing us precious time. Hopefully we will have a working scene by the end of the weekend. The previz scenes are in draft or preview cuality, just to save us some time.

Shortfilm, HVFX - helicopterPOV
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXDid some basic testing today with the helicopter POV scene. We decided to keep the rendering to a minumum, so we went with only a decreased occ (only 28) but with full 2 frame motion blur. We then added grain, deapth fog, deapth blur and vector distortions in fusion to make it look more like a IR camera. We also keyed some deapth focus nodes and bloom to distort the scene even further. Finally we tracked the low polly charachter wich also had a very basic runcykle animation. The ‘‘aim’’ is made simply out of pollygon masks in fusion.

Shortfilm, HVFX - texturing and explosion testing
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXThis week we have been concentrating on texturing and finding ways to make the explosion more realistic and dynamic. By merging layers (such as fluids and HW, SW particles in maya) with 2d particles in fusion, we have now come a bit closer to the final result.

Short film, HVFX - filming and texturing complete
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXWe spent the most part of the week filming at location and viewing the material. We tried to get all the shots done in one day, which was extremely optimistic. The storyboard helped us to be as effective as possible during filming and by the end of the day we had all the material we needed. We now had to focus on deciding which scenes to save and which to cut. There are 2 scenes in the short film that are absolutly essential, so we made it our next goal to get those scenes tracked and tested. A process we can begin with next week.
In order to test the scenes properly we need to have all the texturing done before combining the material. Therefor we spent the last two days UV-mapping and texturing.
We also experimented a bit more with the explosion, combining different particles (hw, sw, fluids, and fusion 2d particles) to get a better idea of the work that is ahead of us.

Short film, HVFX - Modeling complete
in Shortfilm, helicopter explosion VFXThe short film is beginning to take form. We are now two weeks into the project after the planning stage and its gone smoothly so far. Some of the planning had to be rearranged but it worked out great in the end.
Last week we spend all of our time modeling the cg objects that are going to be in the short film. Some animation and fluid tests were made but nothing final so far. The work went smoothly because we had a good idea of how the objects would look and behave in the scenes.
We began with the helicopter and then later decided on the look of the vehicle that the helicopter will fire a missile at.
